Introduction to the Department

The Mathematics Department at St Peter’s aims to foster a culture of problem solving and adaptability amongst its students. In line with the Mathematics curriculum, we are coaching our students to become better at breaking down problems and considering alternative approaches to obtaining solutions. Our goal is to develop thinking and reasoning skills to help students to solve contextual problems. We are also promoting the efficient use of technology to support our students’ Mathematics, but at the same time maintaining high expectations of their mental mathematical skills. We are an energetic team of teachers who love Mathematics and are passionate about exploring the subject and discovering the best ways to pass this enjoyment and wonder onto our students.

Key Stage 3 Information

The emphasis for Key Stage 3 mathematics is on mastering the fundamental elements of each topic to provide a secure foundation on which to build their GCSE mathematics and beyond. We follow a Mastery-based scheme of work for Year 7 and 8 students that will slow down the introduction of new topics to allow students to secure a much deeper understanding of numeracy, algebra and geometry. Not only will students become fluent in the associated mathematical techniques but they will be well-practised in their reasoning and problem-solving skills with these topics.  Year 9 students will begin their 3-year GCSE scheme of work in preparation for their exam in Year 11.

Key Stage 4 Information

In Years 9, 10 and 11, students work hard preparing for their Mathematics GCSE, we use the Edexcel exam board for GCSE exams. We also strongly believe in extending the top end of students and as a result we offer the Additional Mathematics Qualification (FSMQ) to students in Year 11 as an additional, voluntary course which we believe takes able students beyond the GCSE curriculum and also prepares them adequately for studying an A Level in Mathematics or Further Mathematics.
